I went to the break-room just now to pop a bag of popcorn that the employers generously provide for us. I opened the microwave door and found two warm, damp ears of corn inside.

I get it now. Our microwave is actually a time machine.

[info]hortensio and [info]hamsterwoman! An occurence of major proportions is shaking down! An event, even!

A file has been wandering about the Russian internet for the past couple of days like a certain red phantasm of yore about Europe. The file is purported to be Pelevin's new novel, leaked into the electronic sphere out of the publishing house. Supposedly, it even still carries authorial corrections.

The opinion on Pelevin's official site forum is divided. On one hand, it apparently sounds exactly like something he'd write, thematically, stylistically, grammatically, etc. On the other hand, it being an electronic file and all, there is not and cannot be exact proof, unless he gets wind of this (which he probably already has) and testifies as to the file's authenticity or lack thereof.

All this would be purely of academic interest, of course, had I not been able to actually find the file. But I had, so it isn't. I'm emailing you an attachment for perusal at your leisure.

Found: a mock zagovor against Dan Brown. Not one of the conspiratorial kind - one of the "spell against" kind.

And today's prize for most egregious comma abuse goes to... the author of CNN's "Age of information overload" article, for the following sentence:

"Alan Staples Jr., 23, a Lawrence, Kansas, businessman, likes the idea of online books so much that he's even willing to pay a few pennies a page just to avoid a library."

Direct line to God... or not... [Nov. 21st, 2005|10:52 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

(inspired by my Darwinian Medicine readings for last week)

Luke 12:22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.

Luke 12:23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

Luke 12:24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; although tool use in birds is well known, and corvids regularly hammer and/or dislodge objects near them as a displacement behavior when they are angry or frustrated; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?
Luke 12:25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? )

Ok. This is bugging me. I can't find La Force prison. At all. No map from the 18th or 19th century seems to have it. I have browsed dozens upon dozens of maps from 1716 to 1877 on the web. I have scruitinized my own map, which in the eighth plan by N. de Fer dating from 1705. I've found all the streets that bound it, and several old mansions that seemed to border it, at least according to Hugo. But the prison itself is not there. On the map of 1779, just a decade before the prison would become a major revolutionary detention center and on occasion slaughter-house, there are no buildings indicated on those blocks at all. The area between Rue Pavee, Rue Roi-de-Sicile and Rue des Ballets (which dear old de Fer spells as "d. Balets") has Hotel St. Paul east of "Roy-de-Sicile" and Petit St. Antoine west of it. Meanwhile, Hugo is trying his damnest to convince me that the "repulsive ruin" which one encounters in his days (1860s) almost immediately upon turning from Rue des Ballets into Rue de Roi-de-Sicile is "a fragment of the outer wall of La Force."

WTF??!!

The phone rings. I pick it up. On the other line, a pre-recorded sales pitch starts playing:

"Would you like to know more about our affordable cash burial plan?"

Geez, who died and gave them my phone number?

OMG, holy fuck.

Holy.

Fuck.

I swear I had no idea. I solemnly swear. Everyone who wanted to read a brand-new translation of "Monday starts on Saturday", guess what?

It's out!!

The translator is Andrew Bromfield. I know the bloke's work. He translates Viktor Pelevin, another genius of modern Russian fiction. He does a rather sucky job of it, but it's not really his fault - Pelevin is notoriously difficult to translate. I think he could do a much better job with the brothers Strugatskie, despite all the word-play involved in the story.

Ughm. Squee?
